Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction
and
Emotional Stress
Conclusion
Various sources cited in the paper show a number of connections between the emotional stress and physiological processes happening in the body. The evidence of increased muscle tone during emotional stress as well as facilitation of nervous control centres explained in the previous chapters can play a leading role in establishing further influence of emotional stress on the entire body through osseous, facial, vascular and visceral systems. It supports the osteopathic principles of body as a functional unit and interconnection between structure and function. It is clear how interaction of various structures and systems of the body provide functional response in TMJ.
Body is functioning as a unit, so the emotional response reported by the patients and measured by objective technological means is just a part of the clinical picture. It can be suggested that the most efficient approach to the treatment of TMJ should therefore encompass multidisciplinary approach. Body has a great self healing ability, and in order to successfully treat the patient we just need to remove the obstacles to health. So the emotional stress can be assessed as a causing factor and treated as such by a qualified practitioner. On the other hand, if the emotional issues arise or exacerbate as a result of TMD symptoms, osteopathic approach in conjunction with an appropriate dental protocol can provide the right course of treatment.
